I dabbled with WordPress a long time ago, but I never felt confident I could handle the security side of it on my own, so I've been steering clear ever since.
Substack was really nice, so I've been using it as a blog of sorts for a few years now. Lately, though, I've had the feeling that the vibe over there has shifted quite a bit... and there's also this lingering sense of "well, it's not an ad-based business model, so I guess I'm expected to be hustling to get paid subscriptions going..." (all while, under Japanese law, actually turning on paid subscriptions through Substack is a pretty high hurdle...)
Meanwhile, when I stopped and looked around, I realized that AI has made building a blog so much easier, that Cloudflare is offering an absurdly good deal along with genuinely pleasant usability, and that with this framework (is that the right word?) called Astro, you can spin up a blog with a design you actually like without much trouble...
Yeah — looking through the Astro themes, I started really wanting to build my own blog too...!
I have no idea how far I'll be able to take Peaky 8-bit, but I do feel like giving it a real shot, and I went ahead and picked up a custom domain, so I've launched this site as a blog — or rather, a journal.
So, going forward, this journal is where I'll be posting. As for Substack... I feel a bit bad about essentially free-riding, but I'll keep using it as a newsletter delivery channel for the time being, and once I can stand on my own for the email side of things, that's when I'll graduate from it.
昔、WordPressは手を出したことがあるものの、セキュリティ的に自分で管理しきれる自信がなく避けてきました。
Substackがとても良かったので、数年間、ブログ用途的に利用させてもらっていたのですが、ちょっとだいぶ雰囲気変わっちゃったなぁ、、、という感覚があるのと、やはりどこか「広告ビジネスモデルじゃないし、有料サブスクが発生するよう頑張らないといけないんだろうな。。」という感覚があったり、、、（それでいて日本の法律的にはSubstackでの有料サブスク有効化はかなりハードルが高いという状況で。。）
一方で、ふと気が付いてみれば、AIでブログの構築はしやすくなっているし、Cloudflareがとんでもなく破格のサービス提供＋使いやすさを提供してくれているし、「Astro」なるフレームワーク（って言うの？）を用いれば簡単に、好みのデザインのブログも立ち上げられるようになっていた。。
うん、やはりAstroのテーマとか見てると、ブログなども自作したい気持ちになって来た…！
Peaky 8-bitもどこまで広げられるかわかりませんが、とはいえちょっと挑戦してみたい気持ちもあり、カスタムドメインも取得してみたので、ブログもといジャーナルという体でこのサイトを立ち上げてみました。
ということで、今後の主な投稿はこちらのジャーナルで行っていこうと思います！ Substackは、、、フリーライドする形になってしまい心苦しいのですが、しばらくはニュースレター配信用で使わさせてもらうことにして、メール配信周りも自立できるようになったら、その時に卒業しようと考えています。
